Championing Diversity and Inclusion in Education
Bruce, an adoptive Dadi and dedicated art teacher, brings a unique perspective to education. His journey has been defined by a passionate commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion — from the curriculum to the school library.
Having grown up under Section 28, a law that prohibited the positive portrayal of gay relationships in schools, Bruce experienced firsthand the damaging impact of a lack of representation. This personal experience profoundly shaped his belief in the importance of visibility, ensuring that every child feels seen, valued, and included. This commitment has become the cornerstone of his teaching philosophy.
Incorporating Diversity in the Classroom
In his art classes, Bruce actively works to celebrate cultural richness and diversity. He introduces students to a broad range of themes and artists that reflect the varied backgrounds and identities within the school community. Whether admiring the bold fashion photography of Thandiwe Muriu or exploring the intricate geometric designs found in Islamic architecture, Bruce strives to ensure every student sees their heritage acknowledged and respected.
Bruce believes that representation in education goes beyond helping students see themselves — it’s also about learning to understand and appreciate other cultures and perspectives. Through his art curriculum, he aims to broaden students’ horizons, encouraging empathy, curiosity, and respect for the world’s rich diversity.
Creating an Inclusive School Library
For Bruce, diversity must extend beyond the classroom and into every corner of the school environment — particularly the library. Inspired by author Tọlá Okogwu’s ‘mirror and window’ analogy, Bruce has transformed the school library into a space where students can both see their own experiences reflected and discover the stories of others.
Curated book displays celebrating Black History Month and LGBTQ+ literature during Pride Month are just some of the ways Bruce ensures visibility. He understands the profound impact of students seeing their identities positively represented in books and resources — reinforcing that their stories matter.
Bruce’s experience as a member of St. David’s Adoption Panel has further influenced his commitment to inclusivity. Adoption is a subject close to his heart, and he is dedicated to ensuring the school library includes books that reflect the diversity of family life. Carefully selected titles such as All Kinds of Families and Forever Star provide meaningful opportunities for conversations about identity, belonging, and family.
Empowering Students Through Education
Bruce firmly believes that education is a powerful tool for shaping a more inclusive and compassionate society. By embedding diversity and inclusion throughout the curriculum and ensuring students see themselves and others represented in the school library, he is helping to foster a generation that values empathy, celebrates difference, and embraces their own identity.
For Bruce, every lesson, book, and conversation is an opportunity to make a lasting impact — ensuring no child feels unseen or unheard.
