In Conversation: Donna’s Journey as a Single Adopter

25 March 2025 | Blog

Adopting as a single parent can feel daunting, but Donna’s inspiring journey shows how support, resilience, and love can create a thriving family. Donna adopted her daughter through St David’s Adoption Service and shared her experiences to help others considering a similar path.

Facing the Challenges of Single Adoption

When reflecting on her journey, Donna acknowledged the unique concerns she faced as a single adopter. “I had several questions and fears that St David’s were always there to answer,” she explained. “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to offer the same as a couple—that I wouldn’t be enough.”

However, St David’s consistently reassured Donna that her strengths as a single adopter were equally valuable. “They helped me understand that I had different qualities to offer a child, which were just as important.” Throughout the adoption process, St David’s provided guidance and emotional support, acting as Donna’s “cheerleader” during pivotal moments like panel meetings, approval, and matching.

Having faced previous mental health challenges, Donna feared this could hinder her adoption journey. “St David’s encouraged me to be open and honest, and they helped me realise that my experiences were actually a strength.” By sharing her journey authentically, Donna turned her past into a powerful tool for understanding and supporting her daughter.

Advice for Other Single Adopters

Donna encourages prospective adopters to take the first step. “Be bold and pick up that phone,” she advises. “No matter your background or what doubts you have in your head, St David’s will support you.”

To prepare for adoption, Donna took part in various resources recommended by St David’s, including online courses on trauma, grief, and parenting children in care. Adoption UK paired Donna with a buddy who was also a single adopter, giving her someone to talk to throughout the process. Social media groups helped her connect with other adopters, providing valuable advice and local meet-ups both before and after her daughter’s arrival.

Building a Bond with Her Daughter

St David’s played a vital role in helping Donna build a strong relationship with her daughter. “They connected me with The Family Place, which provided incredible post-adoption resources,” she said. Most importantly, her dedicated social worker remained a constant source of guidance and support. “She was always available to answer questions, attend meetings, and provide reassurance.”

Donna recalls one unforgettable moment: “On our first meeting, I arrived at her foster carer’s house with a teddy bear in hand. Before I even stepped through the door, she ran towards me, shouting ‘MUMMY!’ and hugged me tightly. It was such a precious moment that I will never forget.”

Life as a Single Parent

“Becoming a single adopter has changed my life in every way,” Donna reflects. “It’s been a rollercoaster, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.” From sleepless nights to proud milestones, St David’s provided Donna with the support and guidance she needed to navigate the complexities of parenting.

Unexpected medical issues and undisclosed trauma emerged as their journey progressed, presenting additional challenges. “These moments were difficult, but they ultimately strengthened our bond,” Donna shares. “Watching her grow, learn to trust, and feel safe has been the most rewarding part of my life.”

“She has saved me more than she will ever know,” Donna says with gratitude. “I thank St David’s every day for making our family possible.”
