At St David’s Adoption Service, we are dedicated to ensuring that every adopter receives the highest quality support throughout their adoption journey. One of the key ways we achieve this is through our Buddy Support scheme, which offers invaluable peer-to-peer guidance.
This guide provides an overview of the Buddy Service, including how to become a Buddy and how to access a Buddy for support.
What is Buddy Support?
Buddy Support connects prospective or newly approved adopters with experienced adopters who can offer emotional support, practical advice, and guidance based on their own lived experiences.
This service is available at various stages of the adoption journey:
- During the assessment process
- After approval
- Throughout the early stages of placement
- Up to the adoption order
- Post-adoption, when formal support networks may naturally reduce
The Role of a Buddy
Buddies provide much more than just practical advice; they offer compassionate support from someone who has experienced the adoption journey firsthand. Adopting a child can be an emotional process, and having someone to talk to who truly understands can be incredibly reassuring.
Buddies are there to listen without judgment, offering a safe space for adopters to share their concerns, fears, and joys.
Benefits of Buddy Support
Navigating the adoption process can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time adopters. Buddies provide practical insights drawn from their own experiences to help new adopters:
- Understand the various stages of adoption
- Manage expectations during the process
- Prepare emotionally for welcoming a child into their home
For Buddies, volunteering in this role provides an opportunity to give back to the adoption community. By sharing their insights, Buddies offer invaluable support to others while gaining a sense of fulfilment.
Buddies also receive training in active listening, empathy, and problem-solving, enhancing their skills and promoting their own personal growth.
Adopters who participate in Buddy Support frequently report feeling:
- More confident in their parenting abilities
- Less isolated and overwhelmed
- Better equipped to manage the complexities of adoption and parenting
How to Access a Buddy
If you feel that you might benefit from peer-to-peer support at any stage of your adoption journey, accessing a Buddy is simple:

- Ongoing Communication: Engage in regular conversations with your Buddy to receive support and guidance throughout your journey.
Becoming a Buddy
If you are an experienced adopter and feel you could offer valuable support to others, consider volunteering as a Buddy.
- Express Interest: Contact St David’s Adoption Service to let us know you’re interested in becoming a Buddy.
- Training and Guidance: Participate in professional training designed to prepare you for the role.
- Regular Meetings: Join bi-monthly get-togethers to discuss concerns, share insights, and identify additional training needs.
Professional Training for Buddies
To ensure Buddies are well-prepared to provide meaningful support, St David’s Adoption Service offers comprehensive training. This equips Buddies with the skills needed to offer empathetic, practical guidance to those embarking on their adoption journey.
By participating in the Buddy scheme, adopters gain access to a supportive, understanding network of people who have been through the adoption process themselves, creating a stronger, more connected adoption community.
